OCA hosts Open House for International Students

  • On Wednesday, November 14th the Office of Career Advancement hosted its annual Career Open House for International students. The event took place in the New Rochelle office of Career Advancement from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. The OCA recognizes the needs and unique situations that the International students encounter while seeking employment and designed this event specifically for them. There were multiple resources offered to all students that came to the Open House including: job opportunities, resume assistance, scholarships, and paid internships and clarification of CURRICULAR PRACTICAL TRAINING (CPT) VS OPTIONAL PRACTICAL TRAINING (OPT). CPT and OPT allow International students to work while in the United States and to gain experience in their perspective fields.
    Breakdown of CPT vs OPT
    CPT
-Ability to work as an intern in F1 Visa
-CPT  is work authorization that will allow you to do an Internship.
-CPT can be issued for 1 semester to 364 Days ( rules vary between   universities)
    OPT
-OPT is a 1 year work permit given to students after completing a Degree in United States.
-You have to find a job within 90 days of that 1 year period after graduation, else you become out of status.
-If your employer is enrolled in eVerify program, you can get up to 29 months of OPT.
-You have to apply for H1B visa while in OPT.

If you missed the International Open House there is no need to worry. You can still visit the OCA at anytime with your resume. There are often job openings for OPT candidates on campus and in order to be considered you must meet with your OCA advisor.
